Torrential rain and gale-force winds linked to the deaths of at least two people are set to cause severe transport disruption into Christmas Eve.
As a man and woman died in separate river incidents, thousands of people face travel chaos trying to make it home for Christmas.
The Environment Agency issued a severe flood warning – its most serious warning – in the south-west due to ‘extremely dangerous conditions’, but the two fatalities occurred in Cumbria and North Wales
Met Office forecaster Emma Compton said major disruption to rail and road networks would go hand-in-hand with the severe weather conditions, set to stay around over the next week.
Robin Gisby, managing director of operational services for Network Rail, acknowledged the major problems facing train providers.
‘Today’s been a difficult day with the storms and I thank passengers for their patience as we worked clearing around 80 trees off lines and overhead wires to get them home today,’ he said.
‘Tonight we continue that work as the storm passes over the country, with hundreds of engineers out clearing the tracks and fixing any damage
